    guide for some time, now tells Gampopa to travel to
    Mount Gambo Dar. Before Gampopa departs, Milarepa
    gives more guidance and advice.

... Oh Monk from Weu (Gampopa), renounce pride and egotism, cut the strings of affection and attachment, and abandon all wordly desires of this life as a good Buddhist should do. Merge all the teachings into one practice. Always pray to me; never associate with wicked persons, those whose avarice, hatred and ignorance are great, lest you be contaminated by their shadows of sin. There are people who see nothing but others' faults and take all to be their enemies. They vilify others, criticize the Dharma, and bring bad influences to all, for in the depths of their hearts the fires of hatred are always burning. To give an example, the snake has neither wings, legs, nor hands - logically it should be a feeble, meek creature; but as soon as one sees it, one is seized by abhorrence. This reflects the great hatred existing within the snake. He who cherishes hatred within, will see all men as his enemies. Again, some people are very mean - they grasp and store up everything, even if it be a piece of wood or a basket of stones. They say, 'When we become old we will need a means of livelihood; when we die, we will need food for sacrifice in the cemetery.' They say that one cannot practice the Dharma without money, that even a Bodhisattva needs money to accumulate his Spiritual Provisions. Then they indulge in usury and all forms of profit-seeking. Their blood is always boiling with greed. Again, some people will say, 'Now is not the time for us to practice the transcendental teachings. He who does not cultivate his compassion, will fall into the path of Hinayana. One should never stick to one teaching, otherwise he will be possessed by bigotry and narrow-mindedness.' These people are veiled with great ignorance - you should never associate with them or pay attention to their babblings. If you talk to them, they will ask you who your teacher is and what kind of Dharma you practice. But your answers will eventually lead them to anger. Because of their narrow-mindedness, good advice will never do them any good, but only incur their vituperation. As a result they will lose their refuges and be damned. In other words, one's good advice causes other people to sin. This is why you should not associate with men who are dominated by the ever-increasing Three Poisonous Desires.
